路加福音14：25-33， 马太福音16：24-26
25有极多的人和耶稣同行。他转过来对他们说:
【niv】Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
26“人到我这里来，若不22爱我胜过爱自己的父母、妻子、儿女、弟兄、姐妹，和自己的性23命，就24不能作我的门徒(“爱我胜过爱”原文作“恨”)；
【niv】'If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple.
27凡不背着自己25十字架跟从我的，也不能作我的门徒。
【niv】And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28你们哪一个要26盖一座楼，不先坐下算计花费，能盖成不能呢?
【niv】'Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?
29恐怕安了地基，不能成功，看见的人都笑话他，
【niv】For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
30说:‘这个人开了工，却不能完工。’
【niv】saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'
31或是一个王出去和别的王打仗，岂不先坐下酌量，能用一万兵去敌那领二万兵来攻打他的吗?
【niv】'Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32若是不能，就趁敌人还远的时候，派使者去求和息的条款。
【niv】If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
33这样，你们无论什么人，若不27撇下一切所有的，就28不能作我的门徒。
【niv】In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

24于是耶稣对门徒说:“若有人要跟从我，就当舍己，背起他的39十字架，来跟从我。
【niv】Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
25因为凡要救自己40生命的(“生命”或作“灵魂”。下同。)，必丧掉生命；凡为我丧掉生命的，必得着生命。
【niv】For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
26人若赚得全世界，赔上自己的生命，有什么益处呢?人还能拿什么换41生命呢?
【niv】What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
